Nievita C. Hartness - WinterHart Productions

One of my very first memories about photography did not, as might be assumed, involve me as the photographer.

When I was maybe 8 years old, on a hike with my family, my mother wanted to take a picture of me seated on a log with a bouquet of wildflowers that I had picked. Of course, like all moms she said, "Look at me and smile!"

But I didn't want any of that, and I responded that I wanted her to take the picture while I had my face buried in the flowers, "smelling" them. Being that my mom was, at times, a cool mom, she did what I wanted even though inside she was probably grumbling the whole time.

When the pictures came back (this was long before the time of digital, Grasshopper) my mom was proudly showing them to my aunt when they stopped at the picture of me seated on the log. My aunt almost gasped (yes, people do that in real life, not just in the books) and said, "That looks just like a postcard."
